The official announcement for the website's launch, augmenteded.com, has offered free resources for educators.
FREMONT, CA: Augmenteded.com has been launched to offer free AR education and media resources. Motivated by academic research performed by Dr. Patrick OShea and Tim Scapin, augmenteded.com is mainly planned to offer free resources for educators who want to deliver their students with augmented reality experiences. The website is related to a paper published by OShea and Scapin in November 2020, known as an evaluation of commercially available Augmented Reality applications for education. The research was included in the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE) 2020 Innovate Learning Summit.
"A fully searchable and sortable database is present on the site listing the results of their initial analysis. We downloaded each augmented reality app we found in both the iOS - Apple Store and Android Google Play Store that were self-identified as educational," said Scapin. "They proceeded to determine each apps functionality and educational value. Specific data and metrics included categorizing each app by type and assigning an assessor rating score. Their methodology was shaped in such a way that it provides readers with a snapshot of what each app has to offer, does it work, and is it useful. The database is geared to be expanded as more apps are offered on the iOS and Android platforms. All site content is freely accessible."
Scapin added, "Our ultimate goal is to create a community of educators who use our free resources. We hope to enlist individuals to participate in our reviews of apps, especially those which are location dependent - like for an arboretum in Austin or a museum in Paris. We also hope app developers recognize our work so we can help drive positive change towards the creation of more constructive and quality content."
